The county of Kent is situated in the south-east region of England and shares boundaries with Greater London and the counties of East Sussex and Surrey. The biggest town population wise at the last Census was Gillingham with just under 100,000 residents. Other main towns in Kent are: Ashford; Aylesford; Broadstairs; Canterbury; Dartford; Deal; Dover, Folkestone; Gravesend; Herne Bay; Maidstone; Margate; Northfleet; Ramsgate; Royal Tunbridge Wells; Sevenoaks; Sittingbourne; Swanley; Tonbridge; Whitstable; Chatham; Rochester and Strood. Due to the Channel Tunnel, Kent also shares a somewhat tenuous boundary with France.
Kent has long had a tradition for hop growing and has acres upon acres of orchards. This has led to the county being commonly referred to as “The Garden of Kent”. Agriculture is one of the main industries in the county, which although has a number of large settlements, is predominately a rural county.
Another main industry in Kent is tourism. Aside from the beautiful countryside, there are numerous picturesque towns, villages and hamlets including the county town of Maidstone and the historic cathedral city of Canterbury.
There are a number of rural counties in England that lay claim to being “The Garden of England” but you have to go a long way to find somewhere that defines the English countryside as Kent does.
