Hertfordshire Directory

The county of Hertfordshire is situated in the east region of England and is one of a group of counties called the “Home Counties”. Hertfordshire shares borders with Greater London and the counties of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Essex.

The county town of Hertfordshire is Hertford. The biggest town is Watford which had a population in the region of 120k at the last Census. Other main towns in the county are:
Bishops Stortford;  Harpenden; Hatfield; Hitchin; Hoddesdon; Letchworth; Potters Bar; St Albans; Stevenage; Welwyn Garden City; Borehamwood; Cheshunt and Hemel Hempstead.

The Hertfordshire area is rich in history dating back as far as the middle Stone Age. The town of St Albans, known in Roman times as Verulamium, was the biggest Roman town in Britain at one point. There are still remnants of that era left in the town together with the remains of an amphitheatre and a museum of Roman Life. St Albans is also home to a magnificent cathedral.

Nowadays, Hertfordshire is known for its wealthy residents and ‘commuter belt’ style of life due to the county’s proximity to London. There is much more to Hertfordshire than this though as many a visitor to the county will attest.
