The county of Gloucestershire is situated in the south-west region of England and shares borders with the English counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and the Welsh county of Gwent. The county town is Gloucester which has an approximate population of 123,000 people. Other main towns in Gloucestershire are Cheltenham, Stroud, Chipping Sodbury, Kingswood, Cirencester, Tewkesbury and Mangotsfield.
Gloucestershire encompasses the whole of the Forest of Dean and some of the Cotswold Hills. Set in the beautiful Severn Valley, Gloucestershire is one of the most picturesque counties of England.
Predominately a rural county, Gloucestershire has some wonderful towns and villages which are home to some of the finest examples of churches in England. Amongst others, there is the stunning Tewkesbury Abbey church, Gloucester cathedral and an architecturally stunning church at Cirencester.
Gloucestershire is an historic and some would say typically old English county. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in Laurie Lee’s classic novel, ‘Cider with Rosie’, which was set in the county.
