Essex Directory
The historic county of Essex is situated in the East of England. Chelmsford is the county town with a population of over 100,000 residents. The county’s close proximity to the capital, London, makes it an ideal place to commute from.
Other major towns in Essex are: Basildon; Benfleet; Billericay; Braintree; Brentwood; Canvey Island; Clacton-on-Sea; Colchester; Harlow; Harwich; Loughton; Maldon; Rayleigh; Wickford; Witham; Southend-on-Sea; Grays and Stanford Le Hope.
The county of Essex is a large and diverse place with a mixture of large settlements such as the Thames Gateway areas of Thurrock and Southend-on Sea, but there are also lots of rural and seaside communities within its borders.
The Green Belt area of Essex and Epping Forest has meant that the overspill of people spreading from London has effectively ceased into this part of the county. Historically, many houses were built in this area to cater for those who lost their homes following the bombing of London during World War II.
The perception of Essex to some is that of ‘Essex girl’ jokes and references to ‘Essex man’. However, the county is much more than just an overspill and commuter town for London and has much to offer.
