The county of East Sussex is located within the south-east region of England and is bordered with the English Channel to the south and by the counties of West Sussex, Kent and Surrey. The two biggest towns in East Sussex are Brighton and Eastbourne with populations of approximately 134k and 107k respectively. Other major towns include the administrative HQ of Lewes, Rottingdean, Bexhill on Sea, Crowborough, Hastings and Seaford.
The East Sussex town of Brighton has grown from a traditional English seaside resort into a forward-thinking and modern town in recent years. Unlike most of the other towns in East Sussex that rely primarily on tourist trade, Brighton has managed to transform itself into a centre of commerce and is a university town to boot. There are many service industries based in the town as well as a thriving conference trade.
The area now known as East Sussex has been populated for many thousands of years and there are still many artefacts and archaeological treasures discovered to this day. The county’s coastal position just across from mainland Europe has meant that the area has been invaded many times by the likes of the Romans and the Normans. The Battle of Hastings, perhaps the most remembered battle of all time by English school children, took place in what is now called the town of Battle just outside of Hastings in 1066. In this battle, the army of William Duke of Normandy defeated the army of King Harold II of England the story of which is depicted on the world famous Bayeux Tapestry.
East Sussex is a wonderful mix of traditional seaside towns, places of historic interest, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan living.
