The county of Devon is the third largest county in England and has an overall population of over 1.1 million people. Situated in the south-west of England, Devon shares borders with Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. The town with the biggest population is Plymouth with approximately 244,000 residents. The county town is the city of Exeter. Other major Devon towns are Barnstaple, Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Paignton and Torquay.

Devon is home to the 365 square miles of the Dartmoor National Park and roughly a quarter of Exmoor National Park (the remainder is in the county of Somerset). These are huge areas of largely unspoilt moorland that stretches as far as the eye can see.

The east Devon coast is a place of huge archaeological interest. The "Jurassic Coast" as it is known is famous for its geology and there have been a number of significant finds in the area.

The city of Exeter has been regenerated over the last sixty years following extensive German bombing raids during World War II. The cathedral is a must see for any tourist visiting Devon.

Tourism is important to Devon as the county is blessed with having some of the most wonderful beaches in the UK and a generally mild westerly climate. The area around Torquay known as Torbay has become referred to as the English Riviera due to its palm trees and continental style of beaches, buildings, cafes and restaurants.

Devon has become one of the hotspots for tourism in England which has kept its economy in good shape. The natural beauty of the coasts and the countryside will no doubt attract visitors for many a year to come.
