Cumbria Directory

The county of Cumbria is situated in the far north-west region of England and has borders with Lancashire, North Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland. To the west is the Irish Sea whilst Scotland lies to the North. Although a huge county in area, the total population of Cumbria is slightly less than half a million.

Carlisle is the biggest settlement in Cumbria with a population of around 71,000 at the last Census. Other relatively large towns are Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal, Whitehaven and Workington. Near Carlisle parts of the impressive Hadrian’s Wall can be found. The Roman wall no longer keeps Scottish folks out but it is still a wonderful historic site to visit.

Cumbria is mainly a rural county with a lot of its area being mountainous. The highest point in England can be found within the county boundaries, Scafell Pike. A lot of visitors have walked up all 3210 feet (978 metres) of the mountain to take a look at the magnificent views of the Lake District National Park.

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom and arguably the world. Clear blue lakes, mountains and glorious unspoilt countryside abound. People from all over the world flock to Cumbria to visit the National Park thereby boosting the county’s income from tourism. The lakes and hills are particularly favoured by walkers and those who like to sail.

Cumbria is a vast and generally unspoilt county. The people are friendly and have always welcomed visitors with warmth and hospitality. The landscapes are quite stunning and there is no end of historical places to visit.
