County Durham Directory

County Durham is situated in the north east of England and is generally known as Durham. The county town is also called Durham; the population of which is just under 43,000. The two biggest towns in the County Durham are Darlington and Hartlepool each with populations of just over 86,000.

In recent years County Durham has successfully re-invented itself as a popular tourist destination following large scale regeneration of the area. The economy of County Durham was based on traditional local industries such as iron mining, and more specifically, coal mining.   

County Durham has the distinction of being the last first class county to be allowed into the top flight of English cricket and in 2008 the team had progressed as far as being First Division County champions. The ground at Chester-le-Street is in the shadow of the impressive Durham Castle and is one of the most picturesque in England. The Chester-le-Street ground was recently awarded Test Match status which has brought a lot of pride to the people of Durham.

The regenerated County Durham is a wonderful mix of modern and traditional architecture and culture. County Durham, although proud of its industrial heritage, has transformed into one of the nicest counties in England and is now visited by many people from around the world.
