Cornwall Directory

The county of Cornwall is the most south-westerly county in England and is bordered by Devon. The only city in Cornwall is Truro which had a relatively small population of just over 20,000 at the last Census. Although large in area, the county has an overall population of just over 500,000 and quite a low population density of 373 people per square mile.

Being located to the west of the British Isles, Cornwall is exposed to all the different elements the Atlantic Ocean can throw at it. The prevailing winds and rains caused by low pressure weather fronts often batter the coastal towns and villages, especially in North Cornwall. However, when the sun does shine, the beaches, small bays and fishing villages are quite magnificent. Cornwall has also become a surfer’s paradise with perfect conditions for enthusiasts to partake in their favourite pastime.

The economy of Cornwall now relies quite heavily on tourism and the county is one of the poorest areas in the UK. However, the Cornish people are very proud and the majority of local people make visitors very welcome. Similar to the Celts of Wales and Scotland in recent times, there are some who would like to see Cornwall become self-autonomous. There has been a widely publicised and quite vocal minority movement over the last few decades to make this happen, but it does not seem likely that Cornwall will cut off all its ties with England just yet.

With its large and varied coastline, huge swathes of moorland, quaint villages and golden beaches, Cornwall is one of the most striking, and at the same time beautiful, counties of England. Tourism to the county is on the increase as people realise what a jewell they have on their doorstep.
