The county of Cambridgeshire is situated to the east of England and borders the counties of Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire. The county town is Cambridge which had a population of over 117,000 at the last Census in 2001. Cambridgeshire is twinned with the German town of Kreis Viersen.
Cambridge itself is probably best known as a university town and its university is famous for taking on Oxford in various ‘varsity’ sporting matches such as rugby, cricket and the world renowned annual boat race which takes place on the river Thames in London. Although Cambridge is the county town, with a population of over 136,000 people, Peterborough is the biggest town in Cambridgeshire.
Cambridgeshire is also noted for having the UK’s lowest physical point in geographic terms. The low-lying area of Holme Fen is 9 feet or 2.75 metres below sea level. Much of the county of Cambridgeshire is low-lying with the highest point being the village of Great Chishill which is 480ft or 146 metres above sea level.
Cambridgeshire has a lot of sites of historical interest and was also home to such famous people as Oliver Cromwell, former Prime Minister, John Major, and the well known scientist Stephen Hawking.
