Welcome to the Buckinghamshire Directory

The county of Buckinghamshire is situated in the south east of England and borders Greater London and the counties of Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The largest town is Milton Keynes which is a relatively new town and is growing all the time. The population of Milton Keynes is expected to be in the region of 350,000 by the year 2031.

The county town of Buckinghamshire is actually Aylesbury - famous of course for its ducks. Other main towns in Buckinghamshire are: Amersham; Chesham; Hazlemere; High Wycombe; Bletchley; Stony Stratford and Wolverton.

Two of the three biggest rivers run through Buckinghamshire, the Thames and the Great Ouse. The main branch of the Grand Union Canal also runs through the county and has been integrated into Milton Keynes. The great canal, once used for the transportation of goods and materials for industry, now serves as a pleasant place to go walking or to cruise along on a riverboat.

The proximity of Buckinghamshire to London has meant that it has become an affluent area whereby people can live in leafy surroundings but still commute to the capital. House prices in the area, as in the rest of the south east of England, have a history of rising sharply in the county. However, outside of the main towns there are still a lot of lovely villages and hamlets set in idyllic countryside.

Buckinghamshire is an historic and beautiful county. The growth of Milton Keynes and the commuter belt community has also helped the county to prosper. Buckinghamshire has come a long way since being the place where the English Civil War started and the devastation caused to the then rural community due to Cholera and famine in the 19th Century.
