The county of Bedfordshire is situated in the east of England bordering the counties of Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Bedfordshire is one of a group of counties collectively known as the ‘Home Counties’.
The county town is Bedford which had a population of just over 80,000 at the last Census. Although the county town, Bedford is not the biggest settlement. The town of Luton has a population of just over 185,000 and is therefore the largest town in Bedfordshire. Other big towns within the county boundaries are Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard.
To the south of Bedfordshire lie the Chiltern Hills which are part of a much larger chalk ridge. The ‘Chilterns’ were designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB) in 1965 and form a delightful backdrop to the county.
The county name of Bedfordshire was first recorded as “Bedanfordscir” in the year 1011 and literally means “Beda’s ford” or river crossing. The main river is called the Great Ouse which is 150 miles long and flows through Bedford.
Although not one of the biggest counties in England, Bedfordshire is an important place historically and is home to a number of large areas of population in the east of England.
